From 1974 Equipment ManualWhen the 7th Cavalry was organized in 1866, Brevet Major General George Armstrong Custer was assigned as its Liutenant Colonel. During the Civil War, he was the youngest officer to become a commanding general. He distinguished himself in many campaigns as a fine leader. He was a flashy person, designing and wearing his own uniforms and was noted for his long blond hair. In 1876, he, along with companies C, E, F, I, and L, of the Seventh were defeated by the Souix Indians n the Little Big Horn. |
